This Lake District’s bolthole is all about the romance. The Romantic poets (including Wordsworth and Coleridge) did wax lyrical about this part of the UK, after all. And we think this 500-year-old stone cottage sitting in the shadow of Scafell Pike is an ideal retreat. It is delightfully cosy, with wooden beams and exposed stonework adding character and warmth. Outside, a riverside paddock is enclosed by those old stone walls the Lake District is famous for, and you can brunch at the picnic table overlooked by the fells. The large roll-top bath is perfect to soak your aching muscles, and the rustic charm of the bedroom especially welcoming after a day of mountain climbing. There are two pubs within walking distance and nothing but untamed country walks just beyond that.

Home truths: *There is an extra charge for a third guest and the Z fold-out bed is comfortable but small, so best suited to a small child *One well behaved dog is welcome for an additional cost *We recommend you bring a car as there's no shop within walking distance *There is parking in front of the home *A cot, high chair, baby gates and baby monitor can be provided, just ask your host
