Holiday Homes in Ravenglass

Ravenglass holds a special distinction: it is the only coastal village within the Lake District National Park. Set where three rivers, the Esk, Mite and Irt, meet the sea on the western coast, it is a quiet, single-street village with a remarkable history and a wonderfully unspoilt setting between the fells and the estuary. For a base that combines the seaside, Roman heritage and the wild western Lakes, it is quite unlike anywhere else.

The village was an important Roman port, and the remains of its bath house, known as Walls Castle, are among the tallest-standing Roman structures in northern England. Today Ravenglass is best loved for the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, a narrow-gauge steam line affectionately known as La'al Ratty, which puffs seven miles inland through gorgeous scenery to Eskdale. Just outside the village, Muncaster Castle, with its gardens and its hawk and owl centre, makes a grand day out.

Ravenglass is a perfect base for the western valleys. The line and the road lead up into Eskdale, with Wasdale and Wast Water reachable by car, and the coast and the estuary nature reserve are right on the doorstep. For a tranquil, history-rich corner of the Lakes where the mountains meet the sea, choose one of our Ravenglass holiday homes.
