I want Lake District Holiday Homes to be usable by as many people as possible. Everyone should be able to find a Lake District holiday home without fighting the website to do it, however they browse the web. Accessibility is an ongoing commitment rather than a box to tick, and I keep working at it as the site develops.
1. My aim
I am working towards the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA as the standard for this Website. In practice that means building pages with meaningful structure and clear headings, choosing colours with readable contrast, making sure links, buttons and controls can be reached and operated by keyboard as well as by mouse, giving meaningful images descriptive alternative text, and keeping the layout usable across screen sizes from a phone to a large desktop. Where I find something that falls short, I treat it as work to be done rather than a permanent state of affairs.
2. Known limitations
This Website is actively under development. Some areas, in particular the interactive directory and the individual property pages, may not yet meet every WCAG 2.1 AA criterion. I am working through these as part of ongoing development. If you run into a specific barrier, please tell me using the contact details at the foot of this page, as that genuinely helps me put things right.
3. Adjusting your experience
Your browser and operating system include accessibility tools that can improve any website, including this one, and they are often the quickest way to tailor things to you.
Zoom and text size
Every major browser lets you enlarge text or zoom the whole page. In Chrome, Firefox and Edge, hold Ctrl and press + on Windows, or Command and + on a Mac, to zoom in, and Ctrl and 0 (or Command and 0) to reset. In Safari on a Mac, use Command and + to increase the text size. On iPhone and iPad, the Accessibility settings under Display and Text Size let you increase the font size across apps and browsers.
Contrast and colour
Windows offers Contrast themes under Settings, then Accessibility, then Contrast themes. macOS offers Increase Contrast and Reduce Transparency under System Settings, then Accessibility, then Display. On iPhone and iPad, Smart Invert and Classic Invert sit under Settings, then Accessibility, then Display and Text Size.
Screen readers
If you use a screen reader, the common options are well supported. On Windows, NVDA is free from nvaccess.org, and JAWS is widely used. On a Mac and on iPhone and iPad, VoiceOver is built in, under System Settings or Settings, then Accessibility, then VoiceOver. On Android, TalkBack is found under Settings, then Accessibility.
Keyboard navigation
You can move around the Website with the keyboard. Use the Tab key to move between links, buttons and controls, Enter or the Space bar to activate them, and Shift with Tab to move back.
4. Get in touch
If you come across an accessibility barrier on this Website, or there is something I could do better, please let me know. I take accessibility feedback seriously and will do my best to sort out any issue promptly. You can email me at [email protected].
