Lively, characterful and refreshingly untouristy, Ulverston is a Georgian market town on the Furness peninsula, just south of the Lake District. It was the birthplace of Stan Laurel, celebrated today by the Laurel and Hardy Museum and a statue of the comedy duo in the centre, and its skyline is crowned by the Hoad Monument, a hundred-foot tower built in the shape of a lighthouse in memory of the Ulverston-born statesman Sir John Barrow. Twice-weekly markets have been held here under a charter dating back to 1280, and the surrounding area holds real history too, from Swarthmoor Hall, a cradle of the Quaker movement, to Conishead Priory.
