Holiday Homes in Ulverston
Lively, characterful and refreshingly untouristy, Ulverston is a Georgian market town on the Furness peninsula, just south of the Lake District. Its cobbled streets, independent shops and busy calendar of festivals give it a warmth and energy all its own, and while it sits outside the national park, it makes an excellent and good-value base for exploring the southern Lakes, the Furness coast and Morecambe Bay. The town has a charm and a sense of humour to match. It was the birthplace of Stan Laurel, celebrated today by the Laurel and Hardy Museum and a statue of the comedy duo in the centre, and its skyline is crowned by the Hoad Monument, a hundred-foot tower built in the shape of a lighthouse in memory of the Ulverston-born statesman Sir John Barrow. Twice-weekly markets have been held here under a charter dating back to 1280, and the surrounding area holds real history too, from Swarthmoor Hall, a cradle of the Quaker movement, to Conishead Priory. With good rail links and a genuine, lived-in character, Ulverston is the kind of place that quickly feels like home. The southern fells around Coniston are a short drive north, the coast and the Furness peninsula spread out to the south, and the town itself never wants for something going on. Choose one of our Ulverston holiday homes for a base full of character, with the Lakes and the coast both within easy reach.
