Holiday Homes in Dalton-in-Furness
A historic little market town on the Furness peninsula, Dalton-in-Furness was once the most important town in the area, before Barrow's industrial rise, and it retains a real sense of its long past. It lies outside the national park, near the southern coast, and makes a characterful, good-value base for the Furness peninsula, its abbey and castle, and day trips into the southern Lakes. For a small town, Dalton has plenty of history to show. Dalton Castle, a fourteenth-century pele tower built by the monks of nearby Furness Abbey for defence against Scottish raids, stands in the centre and is cared for by the National Trust, while just to the south lie the extensive red-sandstone ruins of Furness Abbey itself, founded in 1123 and at its height the second-wealthiest Cistercian monastery in England. The town was also the birthplace of the celebrated eighteenth-century portrait painter George Romney, who is buried here. On the edge of town, the South Lakes Safari Zoo is a popular family day out. Dalton suits visitors who like to mix heritage and coast with easy access to the Lakes. Barrow and the Furness coast are minutes away, and the southern fells around Coniston are within a short drive. For a quieter, history-rich base on the Furness peninsula, choose one of our Dalton-in-Furness holiday homes.
