Holiday Homes in Broughton in Furness
A small, unspoilt Georgian market town on the quiet south-western edge of the Lake District, Broughton in Furness is a delight for those who like their Lakeland a little off the beaten track. It sits just inside the national park boundary near the mouth of the lovely River Duddon, and serves as the gateway to the gloriously peaceful Duddon Valley, one of the least-visited corners of the Lakes. The town is built around a handsome Georgian market square, at the centre of which stands an obelisk raised in 1810 for the jubilee of George the Third. The old market stocks and stone slabs survive as reminders of its trading past, and the square, laid out in the eighteenth century, makes a charming spot to pause. There has been a market here since Tudor times, and the town appears in the Domesday Book, so for all its quiet today it carries plenty of history. Broughton's real draw is its position. The Duddon Valley, beloved of Wordsworth, leads up into the high western fells, the coast is close at hand, and the southern lakes around Coniston are within easy reach. It is a peaceful, genuine base far from the crowds. For an unspoilt corner of the Lakes with the wild Duddon on the doorstep, choose one of our Broughton in Furness holiday homes.
