Holiday Homes in Grange-over-Sands
For a gentler kind of Cumbrian holiday, beside the sea rather than under the fells, Grange-over-Sands is a delight. This genteel Edwardian resort sits on the northern shore of Morecambe Bay, on the Cartmel peninsula a few miles south of the Lake District, and it has a mild, sheltered microclimate that has drawn visitors since the railway arrived in the 1850s. With its long, traffic-free promenade and ornamental gardens, it is a place for slow strolls, sea air and afternoon tea. The town wears its Victorian and Edwardian heritage proudly. The promenade is made for an unhurried walk, and above the rooftops rises Hampsfell, an easy fell topped by a curious stone shelter, the Hampsfell Hospice, that rewards the short climb with views across the bay. Just inland lies the lovely village of Cartmel, with its great medieval priory, famous sticky toffee pudding and a much-loved racecourse, while the grand house and gardens of Holker Hall are close by. Grange makes a calm and characterful base for Morecambe Bay, the Cartmel peninsula and the southern fringe of the Lakes, which are an easy drive to the north. Do take local advice before venturing onto the bay itself, as the sands hide fast tides and quicksands and are safely crossed only with an official guide. For a restful seaside base with the Lakes within reach, settle into one of our Grange-over-Sands holiday homes.
