Holiday Homes in Kendal
Known as the Auld Grey Town for its handsome limestone buildings, Kendal is the great eastern gateway to the Lake District. It lies just beyond the south-eastern edge of the national park in the valley of the River Kent, close enough to be among the fells within minutes yet a lively, characterful town in its own right, threaded with the narrow alleys and courtyards, known locally as yards, that give it so much of its charm. There is real history here. Kendal Castle stands in ruins on a hill above the town, long associated with the Parr family, and the town gave its name to Kendal Mint Cake, the glucose bar that has fuelled mountaineers from Everest to the Antarctic. The Brewery Arts Centre keeps the cultural calendar busy, the museums tell the story of Lakeland life, including a collection devoted to Arthur Ransome, and the town's well-known festivals of mountain film and comic art draw visitors through the year. Kendal's other great asset is its convenience. With Oxenholme station on the West Coast main line just outside town and the M6 close by, it is one of the easiest places to reach in the whole region, and a fine base for the southern and eastern Lakes, the Lyth and Winster valleys and the limestone country around the Kent estuary. Make one of our Kendal holiday homes your base and you will have town comforts and Lakeland scenery in equal measure.
