Holiday Homes in Kirkby Stephen
In the Upper Eden Valley, ringed by hills between the Lake District to the west and the Yorkshire Dales to the south and east, Kirkby Stephen is a characterful old market town much loved by walkers. It sits outside both national parks, in fine walking country of its own, and makes a friendly, well-placed base for exploring the quieter eastern uplands of Cumbria. The town strings itself along a single main street, presided over by the imposing parish church of St Stephen, so large it is sometimes nicknamed the Cathedral of the Dales. A market has been held here since a charter of 1361, and the town has long welcomed walkers, sitting on Wainwright's famous Coast to Coast route, with the cairned ridge of Nine Standards Rigg rising above. Railway enthusiasts will enjoy Kirkby Stephen East, a restored station and heritage centre, while the town's own station on the scenic Settle to Carlisle line lies a short way to the west. This is a base for those who love the hills but prefer them quiet: the Yorkshire Dales, the Howgills, the Eden Valley and the North Pennines are all within reach, and the eastern Lakes a drive away. For walkers and lovers of unspoilt country, settle into one of our Kirkby Stephen holiday homes and discover a gentler, less-trodden side of Cumbria.
