Holiday Homes in Maryport
On the Solway coast where the River Ellen meets the sea, Maryport is a quiet former port with a surprising depth of history and wide views across the firth towards Scotland. It lies well outside the national park, on Cumbria's western coast, and makes a calm and characterful base for those drawn to the sea, big skies and Roman heritage rather than the busy central fells. Maryport was created as a planned Georgian harbour town in 1749 and named after Mary, the wife of the local landowner who built it, and its steep, ordered streets still reflect that origin. Long before that, the Romans were here: the town stands at the western end of the Hadrian's Wall frontier system, and the excellent Senhouse Roman Museum, set on the cliffs above the Solway, holds one of the most remarkable collections of Roman altars and inscriptions found anywhere in Britain. The harbour and marina, and the coastal path along the firth, complete the picture. As a base, Maryport suits a slower, heritage-rich holiday by the coast, with the Solway's birdlife and sunsets on the doorstep and the western and northern Lakes within reach by car. For a peaceful seaside base with a genuine sense of history, settle into one of our Maryport holiday homes and discover the quiet Cumbrian coast.
