Overview
Castletown Estate - Solway Marsh View is a holiday home in Carlisle, Cumbria. Sleeping up to 4 guests, it holds a 4-star rating. Dogs are welcome.
Along the far north-western edge of Cumbria, where the county looks across the Solway Firth to Scotland, the Solway Coast National Landscape is a place of huge skies and quiet horizons. Low and open, a country of saltmarsh, mudflats, dunes and lowland bog, it could hardly be more different from the high drama of the Lakes to the south, and for lovers of wild, empty coast it is a revelation. This is one of the great wildlife coasts. The Upper Solway flats and marshes are a wetland of international importance for wintering wildfowl and waders, the South Solway Mosses are among the largest undamaged raised bogs in Britain, and the whole shore feels gloriously remote. History runs along it too: the western end of the Roman frontier, part of the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site, reaches the sea here, and the Hadrian's Cycleway and coast path trace the shore. The little port-resort of Silloth, with its cobbled streets and green, anchors the coast. The Solway suits birdwatchers, walkers, cyclists and anyone seeking peace, big sunsets and a sense of space, with Carlisle and the northern Lakes within reach inland. Browse our holiday homes along the Solway Coast and discover Cumbria's wild, watchful northern shore. Our blog
