History runs along it too: the western end of the Roman frontier, part of the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site, reaches the sea here, and the Hadrian's Cycleway and coast path trace the shore. The little port-resort of Silloth, with its cobbled streets and green, anchors the coast. The Solway suits birdwatchers, walkers, cyclists and anyone seeking peace, big sunsets and a sense of space, with Carlisle and the northern Lakes within reach inland.
