Set in a great loop of the River Eden, Appleby-in-Westmorland is one of the most handsome market towns in Cumbria, the historic county town of old Westmorland. It lies in the lovely Eden Valley between the Lake District fells to the west and the North Pennines to the east, so while it is not in the national park, it makes a peaceful and characterful base with two splendid landscapes on either hand.

The town is a joy to explore on foot. Its broad, sloping main street, Boroughgate, runs between Appleby Castle, with its Norman keep known as Caesar's Tower, and the church of St Lawrence, and is bookended by the High Cross and Low Cross. Much of the town's character owes to the seventeenth-century noblewoman Lady Anne Clifford, who restored its castle, church and almshouses, and whose legacy is felt at every turn. Each June the town comes alive for the Appleby Horse Fair, the largest traditional Gypsy and Traveller gathering in Europe.

Appleby makes a wonderful base for the quieter pleasures of eastern Cumbria, the Eden Valley, the North Pennines and the celebrated Settle to Carlisle railway, with the northern Lakes and Ullswater reachable by car.
