On the edge of town, the Rheged centre gathers a cinema, galleries, shops and food under its grassy roof, a boon on a wet day, while ancient sites such as Mayburgh Henge and King Arthur's Round Table hint at the valley's deep history. Ullswater, for many the most beautiful of all the lakes, is a short drive away, the northern fells rise to the west, and the quiet delights of the Eden Valley spread out to the east.
