On the eastern edge of the Lake District, where the fells give way to the green Eden Valley, the red-sandstone market town of Penrith makes one of the most convenient gateways to the Lakes. On the edge of town, the Rheged centre gathers a cinema, galleries, shops and food under its grassy roof, a boon on a wet day, while ancient sites such as Mayburgh Henge and King Arthur's Round Table hint at the valley's deep history. Best of all is the position. Ullswater, for many the most beautiful of all the lakes, is a short drive away, the northern fells rise to the west, and the quiet delights of the Eden Valley spread out to the east.
