Holiday Homes in Penrith
On the eastern edge of the Lake District, where the fells give way to the green Eden Valley, the red-sandstone market town of Penrith makes one of the most convenient gateways to the Lakes. It sits just a few miles outside the national park boundary, with Ullswater and the northern fells close at hand, and it is superbly connected by the M6 and the West Coast main line, so it is an easy place to reach and an easy place to explore from. Penrith is a proper working market town with plenty to enjoy. The ruins of its fourteenth-century castle, once held by Richard, Duke of Gloucester before he became Richard the Third, sit in a park beside the station, and the bustling market square and independent shops reward a wander. On the edge of town, the Rheged centre gathers a cinema, galleries, shops and food under its grassy roof, a boon on a wet day, while ancient sites such as Mayburgh Henge and King Arthur's Round Table hint at the valley's deep history. Best of all is the position. Ullswater, for many the most beautiful of all the lakes, is a short drive away, the northern fells rise to the west, and the quiet delights of the Eden Valley spread out to the east.
